Obesity in Children

The number of children who are obese is growing and has more than tripled in England over the past 25 years – Britain's childhood obesity levels are now the second worst in Europe with nearly a third of children aged 2–15 overweight or obese. While the government considers this complex issue prior to the publication of its new childhood obesity strategy, this meeting will look at a range of options including:

  • the impact of the 'sugar tax' on soft drinks producers announced in the budget;
  • further restrictions on advertising ‘junk foods’; and
  • ways of reducing fats, added sugars and portion sizes.

Both the Prime Minister and the Health Secretary have indicated all options are on the table.

Maggie Throup MP, Member of the Health Select Committee. Formerly Director of an in-vitro diagnostics company and biomedical scientist at the Calderdale Health Authority.

Dr Harry Rutter, Public health physician at LSHTM with expertise in obesity and its determinants. Founder director of the National Obesity Observatory. Led the establishment of the DH National Child Measurement Programme.

Policy and procedures when offending and mental health interact

Joint meeting with the Society of Conservative Lawyers

There are large numbers of offenders with mental disorders in our prisons and remanded in police custody, and mental health issues can impact on all stages of the journey through the criminal justice system:

  • presenting a window of opportunity for an offender to engage with mental health services;
  • providing a need for emergency treatment while in custody;
  • impacting on fitness to plead; and
  • effecting sentencing options such as court diversion to a secure hospital for treatment.

The interaction between mental health services and the criminal justice system is complex and often strained, and there is need for vigilance to protect the vulnerable while ensuring justice. How can we improve our policy and procedures when offending and mental health interact?

  • Rt Hon Sir Edward Garnier QC MP, Barrister and former Solicitor General will speak and Chair the meeting.
  • Ben Gummer MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Health, responsibilities include health in prisons.
  • Lord Ramsbotham GBE CBE, former Chief Inspector of Prisons. Vice Chair of the All Party Penal Affairs Group.
  • Dr Andrew Forrester, Consultant in Forensic Psychiatry and Service Lead for Offender Health, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.
  • Professor Jill Peay, Professor of Law at the LSE and a Member of the Mannheim Centre for Criminology.

Booking will close on 18th February 2016.
